Administrator Amber Jones read IT Director Field’s explanation that the county lacks a secondary Internet service provider connection for multiple firewall units and that additional Cat6 cabling is needed to connect the server room to firewalls on three floors. Jones said the IT director had tried interim fixes but the work is beyond in-house scope.
Commissioners unanimously authorized contracting New England Communications to run updated cabling to the second, third and fourth floor firewalls. Jones said the cost will be charged to the Communications repairs and maintenance radio equipment budget line after consultation with Communications Director Mike Carter.
Carter confirmed the department will coordinate timing to align with other communications work. Commissioners characterized the authorization as necessary to improve network redundancy and support county services that depend on uninterrupted connectivity.
