Public works: Union Avenue paving, meter upgrades complete and stormwater notice expected

Public Works Superintendent Toby Miller told Buckeye Lake council on Sept. 23 that several infrastructure moves are underway: Sensus meter and radio upgrades have been completed and meters are being reprogrammed; Union Avenue paving is scheduled in the next few weeks and may coincide with a Lakeview paving project; and the Ohio-designated water authority (ODWA) was expected to provide a notice on a stormwater project by Sept. 26.

Miller explained a contractor provided a quote to pave a parking lot at reduced cost if done while the contractor is on site for another paving project; he said moving the work into a current contractor schedule would save on mobilization costs, but the village will need legislation or budget approval to proceed. Miller also described the village’s right-of-way fee schedule (Ordinance 2024-53) as a reimbursement mechanism that allows the village to bill utilities annually for costs such as mowing, OUPS tickets and standbys once the ordinance is in effect.

On water infrastructure, council adopted Ordinance 2024-50, authorizing the mayor to sign a contract with ADR & Associates, Ltd. for surveying and engineering work on the First Street waterline extension. Miller said the village remains about four to six weeks from being able to tell contractors to proceed on the stormwater project, pending committee sign-off and the expected ODWA notice.

Councilors asked about crosswalk signage and lighting on Route 79 and discussed golf-cart community signage; Miller said current lighting is set based on data and that examples from other communities would be gathered for policy consideration.
