Council votes to consolidate polling locations after wardens and clerks debate community impacts

City clerks and local wardens presented competing views on consolidating Belfast’s polling locations. Kathy Holland, Ward 5 warden, said the Methodist Church polling place has a ‘‘family feel’’ and strong community tradition, while city election staff and other wardens cited ADA compliance, space and cybersecurity as reasons to consolidate into the larger Ward 1–4 location.
Clerk’s representatives explained that a consolidated site is easier to configure for high turnout and reduces the number of voting stations and election markers the city must manage. Warden Susan Cooney said consolidation could be less expensive and ease staffing challenges. Councilors acknowledged the sentimental and community value of a neighborhood polling place but emphasized access and operational resiliency.
Councilor Paul Dean urged more community input and supported waiting two weeks for additional comment, but the council moved forward and approved consolidation by a 4–1 vote.The council directed staff to implement the consolidation plan and to account for training and staffing needs for future elections.
