Buckeye Lake council approves pay adjustments for elected officials over objections

The Buckeye Lake Village Council on Aug. 26 adopted Ordinance 2024-35, a change to the village pay plan affecting the mayor and council members for terms commencing in 2026 and 2028.
The measure, recommended by the Personnel Committee, was approved by a roll-call vote of 6-1. Councilor Don Cable cast the lone dissent, saying the proposed adjustments were excessive "especially when they are asking every year for another levy on the ballot," and warning about optics during levy campaigns. Councilors Kellie Green and Deb Julian supported the plan; Councilor Douglas Keener seconded the motion to adopt.
Councilors said the Personnel Committee benchmarked benefits and pay against comparable municipalities to set the adjustments. The vote followed discussions at committee level and public acknowledgment of the data used to justify the change.
The ordinance takes effect according to its certification schedule; council did not enumerate retroactive pay. The adoption moves the proposed changes forward so they would apply to officials elected to the specified future terms.
The council's next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9, 2024.
