On May 12 the Select Board heard a presentation from consultant Adam Sturtevant of Northern Benefits on alternative employee health insurance options for the town.
Sturtevant presented five plan options: three through the Maine Municipal Health Trust (MMHT) and two through Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (one PPO and one HMO). The combined total premium for the three MMHT plans was listed as $17,099.11; individual plan quotes ranged from $16,207.95 for one Anthem HMO option to $17,393.07 for the Anthem PPO. Sturtevant recommended MMHT, saying that municipal clients generally fare better with MMHT unless there is a significant change in age rating.
He warned the Board that the upcoming July 1 renewal would likely bring a 9–10% increase and noted that Carrabassett Valley’s relatively higher average age contributes to higher insurance costs. Board members asked about notice periods and deadlines for changing carriers; Sturtevant said notification timing (e.g., 60 or 90 days) matters and that the town would be better off with MMHT absent a significant change in the town’s age profile.
No final plan selection or vote was recorded at the meeting; the discussion will inform the Board’s next steps on employee benefits.
