Select Board hears plan to reconfigure pump track and improve Rt.27 crossing for trails users

The Carrabassett Valley Select Board on May 12 received updates on two trail-safety projects: a pump-track reconfiguration near the bridge and safety improvements at the Campbell Field crossing on Route 27.
Trail Manager Josh Tausus told the Board the pump track will remain in its current location but be slightly enlarged into the woods before the bridge; the plan requires some tree removal and replanting and edging with rocks that Tausus expects can be found on site. He estimated the primary cost to be gravel and grading at roughly $20,000, to be paid from the Outdoor Center account and assisted with Sugarloaf equipment and labor. Tausus said the redesign will make the track more of a recreational pump track rather than a BMX competition facility and will not affect cross-country skiing routes.
Separately, Tausus said conversations with the Maine Department of Transportation produced a first-step recommendation to raise the trail surface on both sides of Route 27 to be closer to the road level, requiring fill; MDOT will advise on additional enhancements such as signage and tree clearing. The Town may also consider seeking an extension of the 35 mph speed zone south of the Campbell Field intersection.
Board members did not adopt final designs at the meeting but agreed the projects are improvements to safety and user experience and directed staff to continue design and coordination with MDOT and local partners.
