Superintendent Carl Malone told the Muncie Parks and Recreation Board on June 16 that summer programming is underway and park maintenance work is progressing.
Malone said National Parks Kid Day at Westside Park drew a strong turnout after a rescheduled date. He described a six-week summer intern program that currently employs 50 young people and provides income that helps participating single-parent households pay summer expenses.
On capital and maintenance work, Malone reported that the city street department, under the oversight of Adam Leech, will handle playground overhauls at Westside Park. Parks staff completed dugout renovations at the softball diamond and plan to install a scoreboard and address lighting wiring issues. Malone said the department received an LED lighting quote of about $9,000 for a basketball court but noted funding for that upgrade is not yet secured.
Malone also detailed ongoing restroom and vandalism issues at several parks and said staff plan to coordinate locking and monitoring schedules with neighborhood groups; he reported crews are completing cleanup after a large tree fell at Thomas Park.
Board members asked about splash pad maintenance frequency; Malone recommended weekly drain checks to prevent clogging and noted recurring incidents of wiring tampering and vandalism at some splash pad locations.
