Montgomery County adopts FY 2026-27 budget amid dispute over community college funding

Nancy Roert, a county resident, spoke during the public hearing to thank staff and commissioners for fiscal stewardship while urging the board to reconsider holding back an increase for Montgomery Community College (MCC), noting the colleges role in local workforce development.
During the boarddiscussion, a commissioner identified in the transcript as John said this is his last budget vote and explained his opposition to increasing MCCappropriation because of an unresolved disagreement involving the collegeand the boards appointment process: "If they would like to comply with the way that this board appoints people, then they will have opportunity next year to ask for more appropriation," he said. The commissioner said he disagreed with MCCadministrative actions and therefore would not support an increase.
The board then took a motion to adopt the fiscal year 2026-2027 county budget ordinance and fee schedule; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
The newly adopted budget also included a series of year-end adjustments in budget amendment No. 5 and several reappointments and appointments to local boards and committees recorded earlier in the meeting.
The board completed associated public hearings for three fire tax commissions (Bay Lake, Lake Tillery and Wadeville) and recommended tax rates for those districts in the same meeting; those recommendations were moved and approved by voice vote prior to the general budget adoption.
The board directed staff to continue standard budget-implementation work and to provide any follow-up information requested by commissioners about MCC funding and appointment protocols.
