Sandy Beach Commission schedules June lifeguard certification, readies signage and buoys ahead of opening

The Sandy Beach Commission on May 21 approved a lifeguard certification class and moved forward on several safety and staffing preparations ahead of the beach’s May 23 opening.
Corinne Houle moved to approve Heather Hurley, a lifeguard instructor, to schedule a certification class on June 6 to be held at Sandy Beach (or another location if needed); Kathy VanOrmer seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Commissioners said most newly hired staff attended a May 17 training session and the cleanup day.
Commissioners also confirmed installation of three new 'Sandy Beach Rules' signs produced by Laurentano Signs and said buoys to mark the swim area will be placed in the water the week of opening. Andy Parker was tasked with researching costs for new buoys and lines and will present findings at the next meeting.
Kathy VanOrmer reported that Torrington Health District certification for the beach is current through June 30, 2026; she said she will handle the renewal during the first week of June. The commission also recorded a community donation: ACE Hardware of Litchfield provided a ride‑on leaf blower used during the May 17 cleanup.
No formal changes to lifeguard staffing levels or budgets were approved beyond scheduling the certification; commissioners directed staff to report back on buoy cost estimates and any other equipment needs on June 18.
