Belpre honors first responders; police department receives two cruisers and logs staffing change

Council on April 28 recognized local first responders and received routine police updates. A colleague credited Sergeant Fields with a long career dating to 1988, noted recent public recognition and said he logged 344 overtime hours in 2024; Mayor Abdella presented him with a care package.
Acting Captain Dave Starcher and other Belpre Volunteer Fire Department personnel, with support from Little Hocking Fire Department on standby, were recognized for door-to-door evacuations and scene management during a gas-leak response on Barclay Street.
Safety-Service Director Mr. Kirby told council two new cruisers were delivered and are awaiting equipment and decals before assignment. "We are now only waiting for the equipment and decals to be added before they get assigned and be used for duty," he said. The department also plans to move the dispatch center in preparation for May renovations.
Mr. Kirby reported that Patrolman Cook accepted a position with another agency and resigned effective the first week in May. The department thanked him and wished him well. Council also noted a strong turnout at a recent prescription drug take-back event.
No formal personnel actions were taken at the meeting; the recognitions were ceremonial and the equipment updates were informational.
