Board approves contingency reimbursement for animal-control officer housing goats after barn fire

After discussing a recent barn fire that left five goats temporarily under the care of the animal-control officer, the West Bath Select Board voted on March 19 to use board contingency funds to reimburse the officer for feeding and housing costs.
Speakers said the officer is feeding the animals at roughly a half-bale of hay per day (estimated at $9–$10 per bale plus grain). Board members asked for accounting and receipts before payment and discussed options to seek restitution from the animals' owners through the district attorney if prosecution proceeds. The officer is using a private trailer to house the animals temporarily.
A motion to reimburse the animal-control officer from board contingency, conditional on receipts and the town seeking restitution where applicable, was made and approved.
