The appointment came after a brief discussion about whether the trustee seat should be held by a select board member or a town resident; one member initially nominated Kathleen Perry but later withdrew that nomination and moved to nominate Ashley Randall. A fellow member seconded the nomination, and the board voted in favor, which the chair described as unanimous.
The board then reviewed job descriptions for the fire chief, code enforcement officer, road commissioner and animal control officer. Members agreed the only substantive edit in the fire chief description was removal of a reference to a town boat the town no longer operates. On the road commissioner description, a member proposed adding language clarifying that the road commissioner should act as a liaison to state agencies for state-maintained roads so residents would not be left determining which agency handles a complaint. “So that way citizens aren't having to play phone tag and figure out who to call,” a board member said during the discussion.
Board members also discussed two suggested additions to the animal control officer description: explicitly referencing liability/insurance coverage when officers use personal vehicles for town business, and adding a training or certification requirement (members cited an online certification available through the state Department of Agriculture). One member recommended placing some insurance or vehicle-operating policy language in the town employee handbook so that it would apply consistently across job descriptions.
After discussion, the board moved and seconded motions to approve the road commissioner description and the amended animal control description along with the remaining job descriptions; the chair recorded the votes in favor. The board also confirmed administrative logistics: the next select board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at town hall and will include a public hearing on the posted road ordinance. The town hall will be closed Feb. 16 in observance of Presidents Day.
The climate resilience committee reported it has been awarded a grant to conduct an energy audit and will convene a stakeholders meeting on May 11 at 6 p.m. at the fire department; the board encouraged identifying residents from different areas of town for participation.
