Neil Stanton, identifying himself as president of a newly formed Neighbor to Neighbor committee, told the Select Board the group has incorporated and is pursuing 501(c)(3) status to replace social services formerly provided by Helping Hands.
"Our mission statement is to facilitate the well-being of all Westport Island residents by providing access to food, fuel, transportation, and other essentials," Stanton said, describing weekly food deliveries coordinated with St. Phillips and partnerships with local ride services and volunteers.
Kathy Anderson, who the presentation identified as treasurer, provided fundraising figures: the group collected $27,171 in 2025, paid out about $1,271, and reported $1,833 collected and $542 paid in 2026 so far, leaving approximately $28,461.56 available. Stanton and Kathy said they are coordinating with residual Helping Hands funds and local partners, including a ride service (Fish) and area farms that contribute food.
Organizers stressed the group will work through partners rather than replicate existing services. Stanton thanked town staff for logistical support, including using town offices for meetings and mail. He asked residents to spread the word about availability of assistance.
Next steps: Neighbor to Neighbor will continue its 501(c)(3) application, expand outreach to residents in need of heating or food assistance, and coordinate referrals with local partners.
