Norwich Township trustees approve Station 84 opening notes, capital purchases and conditional hires

Norwich Township Board of Trustees members met Aug. 5 in Hilliard and recorded several public-safety and personnel actions, including the board’s acknowledgment that Station 84 opened on Aug. 4, 2025, and unanimous approval of multiple capital purchases and conditional hires.
The board heard from Fire Chief Dave Baird, who said Station 84 is now open and that final punch-list items are underway. Chief Baird also reported prior mold-removal work at Station 82, that a company was hired to test mold at Station 82, and that he plans to bring a proposal for a Station 82 expansion before the Brown and Norwich boards. Trustee Sonny Cantrell asked who would be responsible for expansion costs; Chief Baird summarized the existing Brown–Norwich contract arrangements but did not state a dollar amount.
On formal motions, the trustees unanimously approved purchasing an irrigation system from Mars Irrigation and Landscaping, LLC for $38,200 as part of the 2025 capital budget (motion #250805.07). They also approved refurbishing Engine 80 through Donnie Weaston for $70,000 (motion #250805.08); both motions were carried with three yes votes and no opposition.
The board extended a conditional offer of employment to firefighter candidate Austin Buentello at top pay; the offer is contingent on successful completion of a psychological evaluation, CVSA, a pre-employment drug screen and a pre-employment physical (motion #250805.09). The trustees also approved a conditional offer to Hallie Easterday for the Fire Department administrative assistant position, contingent on a successful background investigation (motion #250805.10). Separately, the board voted to rescind a prior conditional offer previously extended to Jonathan Jordan (motion #250805.11).
All motions in this package were moved and seconded in the meeting records (most frequently moved by Rick Tidd and seconded by Sonny Cantrell) and passed unanimously. The meeting minutes record the motion identifiers for reference, but no specific hiring start dates or estimated costs for the Station 82 expansion were disclosed during the meeting.
What’s next: Chief Baird indicated he will bring a formal proposal on Station 82 expansion to the Brown and Norwich boards in the near future; that proposal will be the first formal venue to discuss costs and timelines for that project.
