Wilde Manor owners preview exotic‑animal B&B and educational programming for Halifax County

Owners Molly Waller and Nick Rich presented an update May 19 to the Halifax County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors on Wilde Manor, their restoration of the historic Tarover property and plans to operate initially as a bed‑and‑breakfast with later day‑visit educational programming.

Planning/Zoning Administrator Detrick Easley summarized the ordinance change that allowed exotic animals and B&B use at the site and introduced the presenters. Waller and Rich described interior renovations, themed guest rooms, a library bar and a family suite overlooking the giraffe pasture. They said the Manor dates to 1854 and is historically connected to the Berry Hill family.

Rich said the property recently received two young male giraffes, which were transported in a custom trailer and kept in a barn while acclimating; they have been allowed outside on cooler days. Waller described lemurs (including one named Voalohany), and penguin chicks that will remain with parents while acclimating for later human‑facing educational programs. She said staff includes a former Disney’s Animal Kingdom education manager to develop curriculum and that school visits are planned once staffing is in place.

Presenters said they had hosted regional tourism directors and are forming a River Road partnership linking Berry Hill, Springfield and Wilde Manor to promote regional visitation; Halifax residents will receive discounts. County Administrator Ron Brade and Planner Detrick Easley offered to coordinate a tour for Board members prior to public opening.

The presentation offered no formal vote or action; staff will process any permits or inspections needed before commercial operations begin.
