Robbins mayor announces more than $39 million in grants, outlines service moves for hall renovation and community programs

Robbins, Ill. — Mayor Darren E. Bryant told the Village of Robbins Board of Trustees on Jan. 9 that the village has received or is in line for more than $39 million in grants and urged patience as the village completes a renovation of its hall.
Bryant said the water department will operate from the Robbins Police Department first floor while the renovation is underway and that residents may pay water bills, buy village stickers and obtain permits there during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. He said other departments will operate from the Community Center at 13800 Trumbull Ave. and encouraged residents to sign up for text alerts and robocalls for updates.
Other announcements included that village stickers go on sale beginning Jan. 8 and must be purchased and displayed by Feb. 28, and that the Robbins Fire Department can assist residents with free smoke-detector installation. The mayor also provided a LIHEAP hotline (800-571-2332) for income-eligible Cook County residents and publicized a “Chat with the Chief” session scheduled for Jan. 16, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Robbins Police Department.
Department heads outlined recent activity for the board: Chief Malley (Fire) introduced a new ambulance and said the department responded to more than 1,300 calls; Gerald Stewart (Public Works) noted demolition of 40 distressed properties; Corey Baker (Building Department) reported increased permit revenue and adjudication activity; and Chief Scott (Police) reported one homicide during 2023. Administrator Shuntai Sykes said she is managing eight departments during the renovation transition.
Trustee Tiffany S. Robinson said that a final draft of Municode is complete and available on the village website and that “Coffee Talk with the Trustee” will resume on the last Saturday of the month. Trustee Gregory N. Jackson said a finance meeting will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. to discuss the audit.
During public comment, resident Ms. Ratliff praised Mayor Bryant’s work, saying, “Although he's young, no one is perfect, but you can see he's concerned about the people in the community.” Resident Mr. Ward asked about the status of a leak survey and whether the village-hall design is complete. Ms. Westbrook asked whether the village could pursue ComEd over vegetation on Emery and consider issuing a ticket.
