Marquette County human services board approves 2026 CVSO budget, retains full-time assistant

The Marquette County Department of Human Services Board voted Aug. 4 to approve the 2026 budget for the County Veterans Service Office (CVSO), preserving the CVSO assistant as a full-time position for a total of 1.5 positions and forwarding the plan to the Executive & Finance Committee.
Veterans Services Officer Kris Bergh presented the proposal and urged that maintaining a full-time assistant was necessary given caseload and backlog data he shared with the board. Commander Randy Polk of the local American Legion spoke during public comment in support of the Veterans Service Office’s staffing and services.
Peggy Krause moved and Chuck Bornhoeft seconded a motion “to approve the 2026 CVSO budget with 1.5 position and to forward to the Executive & Finance Committee.” The motion passed 4–3. The minutes record the three no votes as Cathy Christensen, Mary Walters and Tim Jozwiak; the four yes votes were Chuck Bornhoeft, Peggy Krause, Ken Borzick and Scott Kempley.
Kris Bergh also reported that 10 cases were closed in July and that 10 cases remain before the Board of Appeals; he noted recent outreach events and said the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs plans additional infrastructure and technology funding for VA health facilities.
The board’s approval keeps the CVSO assistant at full-time rather than reducing it to 50%, and sends the budget on to the Executive & Finance Committee for further review and any additional action.
