Superintendent reports construction progress, enrollment and child-nutrition figures

Superintendent Tanya Jones told the board the district had 3,446 students enrolled for the coming year and 358 employees on staff. She provided multiple bond and construction updates: mobilization and demolition for the fieldhouse and grandstands are complete, site work and utility relocation are underway, and contractors are building the pad for the new fieldhouse. Jones said dirt is being moved from one side of the site to another to form the pad and that geotechnical checks will follow staged fills.
Jones described ongoing demolition and renovation inside the original high school and middle school — lockers and ceilings removed, wall repairs and painting in progress, and a cafeteria expansion under way. She said work under the bleachers includes new buildings being constructed beneath the seating area, and noted that Cherokee Nation previously rented part of the building and that third-party rentals are being considered for kitchen use.
On child nutrition, Jones reported 43,882 meals served across 11 serving days in May and 967 meals served in the first three days of summer school pickups. She said the program ran about $4,600 negative for the month, driven in part by a $13,000 oven purchase for the middle school; staff expect to present a full-year accounting in July and said they view the investment as a necessary capital purchase to sustain service for families.
Jones also announced that graduates and families selected Sunday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. for the senior graduation, and reminded the board of upcoming dates: next board meeting July 14 (including an executive session for the superintendent evaluation), staff return on Aug. 3 and students return on Aug. 6.
