Committees send contracts, a large fuel invoice, appointments and two charter amendments to council consent agenda

Several routine but consequential items were moved to the council consent agenda following committee review on April 6.

Finance and Personnel approved placing a law-director request to enter a $19,000 contract with Summit County for the Direct Indictment program on the consent agenda. The same committee also placed an emergency request to pay an invoice from Port Petroleum for fuel delivery totaling $221,502.73 on the agenda.

Appointments: The City Properties, Parks and Recreation special committee recommended confirmation of Sarah Sabatiki to the Parks and Recreation Commission (term through Dec. 31, 2026). Finance and Personnel recommended placement of Terry Dyer for appointment to the Barberton Tax Appeals Board (term through Dec. 31, 2028).

Charter review: The charter review committee put two proposed charter amendments on the consent agenda: one would convert the Parks and Recreation Commission to an advisory body under the service director (moving appointing authority) and another would remove the 1979-era requirement that six physical public posting places be maintained if the city uses public posting for legal notices. Supporters said the changes modernize operations and clarify responsibilities; the committee voted to call both measures out for the council agenda.

What happens next: These consent items will appear on the full council agenda; council members can remove any consent item for separate discussion prior to final votes.
