Coastal commission to advise on proposed special-permit text amendment; elects Simon as vice chair and discusses meeting scheduling

The Romernecks Harbor Coastal Zone Management Commission discussed a referral from the Village Board of Trustees on May 21 asking for commentary on a proposed local law to change special-permit renewals. The proposed text amendment would set an initial three-year term for special permits and allow administrative extensions thereafter; the trustees asked for advisory input from the planning and coastal commissions before the zoning board completes its review.

Commissioners raised timing concerns and noted the planning board’s meeting schedule and the zoning board’s forthcoming review; staff said the planning board would take up the matter at its next meeting and urged the commission to submit comments promptly so advisory notes can inform subsequent hearings. A commissioner offered to draft commentary and circulate it to colleagues.

Separately, the commission elected Simon as vice chair after he volunteered for the role. The chair moved to elect Simon, a second was recorded, and the motion carried by voice vote.

Commissioners also reviewed internal procedures, discussed options for training coordinated by village staff to improve cross-board communication, and noted recurring quorum and scheduling challenges for monthly meetings. Staff said training for boards is being planned and encouraged earlier communication about attendance to reduce cancellations.
