Cortland prioritizes street, water and maintenance work; approves spigot and highway allocation match

The Village Board of Cortland on July 10 reviewed multiple maintenance and infrastructure items and approved several operational steps.
Utility Superintendent Briggs presented priorities for an asphalt overlay and proposed areas to include in a Pavers proposal; he also said he would photograph the Barta property along Highway 77 and prioritize three blocks for maintenance. A McGee Construction bid for six driveway/repair areas was presented; Briggs will solicit at least two additional bids and the board may call a special meeting to expedite repairs.
The board voted to approve installation of a spigot on the north side of the Fire Hall for $225 to provide a second watering point for village trees (motion by Douglass, seconded by Birkett; roll call all yes). Keys to the dump will be changed Aug. 1 and new locks/keys obtained; residents will have a limited time to exchange old keys.
Briggs also noted the lead/copper survey is due Oct. 24; only about 50 surveys have been returned, so the clerk will increase outreach by placing copies at the Post Office, EZ Stop and on the village website and social channels. Staff training dates (811 diggers hotline and water training) were reported.
For community events, Douglass said fireworks and other activities are scheduled for July 27. The board approved a 25% highway allocation match of $2,120 to support local highway funding projects (motion by Douglass, seconded by Birkett; roll call all yes).
