Petition to display portable buildings draws lukewarm support; board to prepare one-year conditional resolution

At a public hearing June 17 the Village Board heard a Conditional Use Permit request from Kurt Larkin of Larkin Portable Buildings to display portable accessory buildings on property east of Highway 77 in the Highway Commercial District.
Jody Anderson reviewed the application and the Planning Commission's recommendation to approve the permit provided the applicant keep the access road and grass mowed. Several trustees said they preferred a temporary approach to test the use: Chair Scott Peterson proposed allowing the display for one year rather than granting a permanent approval. Trustee Burklund suggested a year-end review to see how the site looks in practice. Resident Nancy Witters spoke in favor, while Yana Johnson said she wanted a clearer plan for setup since the business would not be moving fully to the village but only displaying buildings for sale elsewhere.
The board closed the hearing at 6:09 PM and directed staff to prepare a resolution for the July meeting that will include stipulations: a one-year review, a site plan showing placement of buildings, a cap of no more than 10 buildings on site at a time, and requirements that the access road and grass be maintained.
No formal conditional use permit was approved at the June meeting; the item will return for a formal vote after the resolution and site plan are prepared.
