SRO urges city vape ordinance; Cedarville council tables proposal to seek school-board input

At its Sept. 17 meeting, the Cedarville City Council agreed to delay consideration of a proposed municipal ordinance aimed at curbing youth vaping after the school resource officer said school policy does not provide sufficient authority.
SRO Officer Chris Kirkendall told the council there is a "need for a City ordinance to combat Vape usage," saying school rules alone were not deterring widespread use. Officer Kirkendall also said he had recently discussed code concerns with a resident on Neal Way during routine enforcement duties.
Alderman Breshears suggested the council obtain input from the Cedarville Public School board before moving forward. Alderman Odom moved to table the item until the council secures confirmation of school-board support; Alderman Breshears seconded. The motion passed 4-0.
The council did not set a new date for the ordinance discussion. The tabling means no ordinance language or enforcement mechanism was adopted at the meeting; council members said further consultation with school officials is required before the council will resume consideration.
