Superintendent: interim assessments show low early-grade ELA proficiency in Pocahontas

Superintendent Dr. R. Buckle told the Pocahontas School Board on Dec. 16 that interim assessment data from the first week of December shows the district lagging state averages in early-grade ELA. "In third grade right now they're predicting about 9% of our kiddos proficient compared to 22% at the state level," Buckle said, adding the interim is a "dipstick" that helps predict summative outcomes.
Buckle said the district uses the I‑Ready portal and other classroom-level assessments to monitor progress and has scheduled professional development (Jan. 6) and other interventions. He also said the gap narrows in higher grades and noted the district is reviewing its comprehensive math curriculum with plans to bring recommendations to the board in the spring. No formal actions were taken beyond continued monitoring and a planned curriculum review.
