Cherokee Village updates ARDOT bridge replacement, approves July 4 fireworks and pancake breakfast permits

Mayor Steven R. Rose updated the Cherokee Village City Council on the Arkansas Department of Transportation bridge replacement project, providing the ARDOT job number 050171 and saying the work is being performed in two phases: the southern bridge is expected to be completed in 2024 and the northern bridge in 2025. Rose said crews will work extended hours, shoulder-closed signs and road-closed-ahead signs are in place, detours are posted at Hwy 62, and the city asked ARDOT to place a message board by Lakeview Diner.
The council also approved two short-term special use permits for July 4 events. Permit #2024-06 (Thunder on Thunderbird fireworks, applicant Pamela Rowland) and Permit #2024-09 (Cherokee Village Volunteer Firefighters Association Pancake Breakfast, applicant Chief Dienst) were approved after a motion by Council Member Martin and a second; the motion passed with six yeas.
Fire Chief Dienst told the council the pancake breakfast will run from 6:30 a.m. to noon at Baseheart Fire Station and that the new fire truck is parked outside for the public to view after the meeting. Chief Dienst also noted upcoming OSHA training updates and offered handouts to interested attendees.
Mayor Rose asked residents to exercise caution during the bridge construction and said the improvements should prevent future bridge impassability from high water once completed.
