Cortland board allocates $2,500 to begin manhole maintenance after sewer issues

Utility Superintendent Briggs told the board April 8 that the village has been experiencing sewer issues, in part because residents flush wipes that are marketed as flushable but cause blockages. Briggs described needed manhole scoping and maintenance and said Johnson Service estimates 15–30 minutes per manhole and charges $475 per hour.
The board approved a motion by Burkey, seconded by German, to authorize up to $2,500 to begin maintenance work by Johnson Service; roll call was unanimous. The board noted that general maintenance could then be performed using the village’s jetter.
Briggs also reported other maintenance items: he sought approval to turn on the ballpark water, has been coordinating with Miller & Associates on lagoon and PK Management development questions, and will meet with the State Fire Marshal and Windstream about utility locating and contractor coordination. The board instructed staff to proceed with the immediate manhole work and return with updates on scope and costs.
No additional public‑funding sources or long‑term maintenance contracts were specified during the meeting.
