Hancock County EMS reports rising workload, vehicle repairs and plan to bring new ambulance from Texas

Hancock County EMS officials told the county board on June 1 that the service handled 129 calls in May, of which 120 were billable and 98 resulted in patient transport. The report, delivered during the Health and Miscellaneous meeting at the county courthouse in Carthage, said 37 calls were basic life support, 59 were advanced life support and six were treat-without-transport incidents.
Visitor and EMS representative Aaron Feagain reported mechanical issues affecting the fleet: Truck 22 has brake problems that are being repaired, and Truck 25 has an exhaust gas recirculation issue. Feagain said the department is exploring options to bring a new ambulance from Texas, including flying to Texas and driving the vehicle back or arranging transport; he will check costs for shipping versus driving. He also said he will speak with Stryker about refurbishing existing cots into power-lift units.
The board did not take any formal action on EMS procurement at the meeting. The report served as an operational update and a request for staff to continue pursuing the most cost-effective transport and equipment-upgrade options.
