Cortland board votes to solicit bids for village trash service; current contractor to be notified

The Village of Cortland voted April 8 to solicit bids for residential trash service after hearing from a potential bidder, Jason Moore of MARS Garbage.
Moore described the company’s expanded service territory since 2021, availability of dumpsters for community cleanups and Community Days, and said service in the village would occur on Mondays. He told the board that MARS contracts typically run five years and indicated the firm would submit a bid if the village issues a request.
Following the presentation, the board approved a motion by Burkey, seconded by German, to put trash service out to bid. The clerk was directed to send a termination/notice letter to current contractor Waste Connections before the end of April; bid specifications will be finalized at the May meeting and the board expects to determine the winning bid at the June meeting, with any new contract to begin July 1, 2026.
The decision sets a timetable for the village to compare service options and pricing; the board did not disclose target service levels or estimated contract amounts during the meeting. The clerk will publish bid specifications for prospective vendors to review.
