Public commenters and community representatives addressed the council on several community items during the June 16 meeting.
Homeless youth and service hub: Danny Burquette asked when unsheltered homeless youth and young adults would be treated as city business and urged investment in prevention and a youth services hub to avoid chronic homelessness. He framed the ask as a call for taxpayer investment in prevention and mentorship programs.
Thirstston County Fair: Thomas Cena Cooper thanked the council for lodging-tax support, outlined fair plans tied to America 250 celebrations and invited councilors to welcoming ceremonies running July 30'Aug. 2. She said lodging-tax funds increased advertising and entertainment budgets and listed fair attractions.
Vietnam memorial replica (Wall of the Hills): Michael Steedman and Jorge Castion described the traveling three-quarter-size Vietnam memorial replica and a 53-foot education trailer, said Lacy is the only host site in Washington, Oregon and Idaho this year, and requested volunteer support and $30,000 in community fundraising to stage the exhibit and educational tours.
Museum ribbon cutting and community recognitions: Council members and staff noted the Lacy Museum and Cultural Center ribbon cutting at the Belquare Center, and staff presented certificates to graduates of the seven-week Lacy Community Academy (15 participants). Mayor and council also presented proclamations recognizing America 250 and LGBTQIA+ Pride Month; El Sanchez of Pizza Clutch described school-based support groups and cited an internal survey finding that 64% of participants reported thinking about suicide less after attending.
