The Pocahontas School District classified Personnel Policy Committee voted to approve updates to the district's classified parental leave policy, Policy 10.46, during its Oct. 28 meeting.
Staff presenting the policy told the committee the changes reflect recent clarifications in state rules and that the revisions will be in effect in practice in about 90 days. The presenter said staff '2I've set aside some funds...' and described eligibility language, noting that an employee will be eligible for paid leave under the policy if they were employed full time by a public school in Arkansas for 12 months prior to hire rather than having to accrue a year in Pocahontas.
Committee members asked questions about the rule language and the presenter responded that the state rule clarified that prior service in another Arkansas public school counts toward eligibility. A member made a motion to approve the policy and it was seconded; the committee approved the update by voice vote.
The committee did not change the district's authority to implement the policy sooner or later; staff emphasized that, in practical terms, portions will be governed by state rules once the rule takes effect. Staff said they will share final policy wording with the committee and follow up as state guidance is finalized.
Next steps: staff will circulate the formal policy language and any state guidance to committee members, and the committee will forward its recommendation to the board as appropriate.
