Union City to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation, council authorizes public meeting

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to pursue the Broadband Ready Communities designation and to authorize the Erie County-based Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to serve as the municipal broadband champion for the application process.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells and councilors discussed that the designation would create an opportunity for additional internet service providers to evaluate service in the borough and that current permitting requirements conform with the program’s recommendations. Councilor Kerns moved and Councilor Joyce seconded a motion to proceed with the public meeting and resolution process; the motion carried unanimously.
No ISPs, grant amounts or timelines were specified at the meeting. Council asked staff to proceed with scheduling the public meeting required by the Broadband Ready Communities Program and to return to council with the draft resolution and meeting notice.
