Planning commission approves rezoning for Chris Haven Veterinary Services

The Grayson County Planning Commission voted June 16 to approve a request to rezone about 1.421 acres of a 21.416-acre parcel from Rural Farm to Commercial to allow a hauled-in livestock veterinary facility operated by Mary Tomlinson.
Planning staff presented the application (staff cited application number 20260037 during the staff report) and concluded the proposal would support the county’s agricultural economy, posed minimal environmental impacts under normal development regulations and was compatible with surrounding rural farm zoning. The Virginia Department of Transportation told staff that no land-use permit or roadway improvements were required for the site, staff said.
Mary Tomlinson, the applicant and owner of Chris Haven Veterinary Services, told the commission she envisions a building footprint about 120 by 60 feet with fencing and gated access so animals can be contained and hauled in for scheduled appointments. She said the facility would increase efficiency for her multi-county practice and is likely to create jobs as demand grows.
“Having a hauling facility I hope to have more people coming in and thereby I will need more employees,” Tomlinson said during her remarks.
Commission discussion noted neighboring properties are protected by conservation easements and that staff had not received public comments opposing the request. After opening and immediately closing the public hearing because no one signed up to speak, the commission made a motion to approve the rezoning; a roll-call vote was taken and the motion carried. In the staff report the application was referenced as 20260037, while the motion language later referenced 202637; staff told the commission it will forward its recommendation to the Board of Supervisors, which will hold its own public hearing next month for final action.
The commission’s action is a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors; final approval will require the board’s vote at its subsequent hearing.
