Sanibel council flags coyote study, sea-turtle protection and rec-center needs as early priorities

Several council members used the budget workshop to highlight environmental and recreation priorities they want staff to cost out for the July draft.
Councilwoman DeBruce said she strongly supports a coyote population study and sea-turtle nest protection and asked staff to include them among early budget priorities. "I would, strongly support our coyote population study and the sea turtle nest protection," she said.
Council and staff exchanged views about timing and funding: staff asked which items the council wanted prioritized and noted that many capital items are grant-funded and not discretionary, but said they will prepare estimates for council consideration in July. Council members also discussed town-center concepts and the recreation center, asking staff to bring cost estimates and to break out programmatic versus facility operating costs so council can weigh tradeoffs.
Next step: staff will prepare cost estimates and options for council-prioritized items and include them in the July budget packet so council can indicate which to fund if revenues tighten.
