Committee backs one-year Light Source Communications franchise, recommends council adoption

The Las Vegas recommending committee unanimously recommended approval of an ordinance that would grant Light Source Communications LLC a non-exclusive one-year franchise to install, operate and maintain communications services in the city, staff said.
Gina Bishop, franchise officer in the Office of Strategic Services, told the committee the agreement allows the company to provide broadband and telecommunications services and would be for an initial one-year term with an option for a one-year extension. "Light Source Communications will pay to the city 2% of its broadband gross revenues and 5% of its telecommunications gross revenues," Bishop said.
Bishop said the resolution setting a public hearing and including a copy of the franchise agreement was adopted at the May 20 city council meeting, published by the city clerk on May 22 and May 28, and that a required public hearing was held June 3 with no public comments. The committee chair opened a public hearing on June 26; no members of the public spoke and the chair closed the hearing before the committee voted.
A committee member moved to approve the item and the motion carried unanimously. Bishop said the ordinance will be eligible for final adoption by the city council at its July 1 meeting.
The recommendation now goes to the City Council for consideration and possible adoption at the next council meeting.
