North Providence delays start-time changes for 2026–27, will study routes further

The North Providence School Committee voted on June 15 not to change school start times for the 2026–27 school year after district staff identified ‘‘low-hanging’’ transportation efficiencies from work with Durham on a routing study.
The superintendent told the committee the district found short-term efficiencies that can be implemented next year but that a fuller review is needed because of school consolidations and changed travel patterns from new construction. The district will continue the study through the fall into January to determine whether adding a fourth bell tier or adjusting middle-school start times is warranted.
Committee members asked how the study will assess impacts and asked for clear communications to families if schedules change. Officials said the longer review is intended to allow more analysis and public notice rather than rushing a change into the coming school year.
No vote to change start times was taken; the committee endorsed the approach of implementing immediate efficiencies while commissioning the deeper review.
The district did not provide a timeline for when final recommendations would be brought back beyond the stated January review milestone.
