The Wabash City Schools Board of Education voted June 15 to adopt an updated wireless-device policy (Policy 4307) and to approve updated 2026–27 student handbooks that incorporate the change.
Board members conducted a second reading of Policy 4307 to ensure compliance with the new state law requiring schools to restrict cell-phone use during the school day. A district presenter said the policy requires devices to be turned off and stored; acceptable storage examples mentioned were cubbies, lockers or backpacks, and the presenter noted implementation will follow grade-level handbook procedures. A board member asked whether devices should be "powered off"; the presenter answered in the affirmative.
The board also approved updated handbooks for middle and high school. During handbook discussion a board member pointed out a dated reference on page 12 referring to the 2025–26 school year; staff said they would correct the year language so it does not require annual edits. The meeting referenced the athletic director (Mr. Kel Shimemer) in the context of updating role-year references in handbook sections.
The policy and handbooks were approved by voice vote, meeting the district’s requirement to have the policy in place by the July 1 state deadline. The district indicated the policy text and handbooks would be available online and in the central office; the board discussed adding policy information to registration materials to inform parents.
