Hyannis Area Schools board adopts several policy changes; one member opposes Malcolm X Day recognition

At its July 8 meeting the Hyannis Area Schools Board adopted a package of policy updates and new policies, and approved a change to the district grading scale.
On a motion by Kevin Anderson, seconded by Clint Taylor, the board approved a revision to Policy 6025 addressing student cell phones and other electronic devices. The board passed several new policies by separate motions: 6039 (Repeat of Grade at Parent-Guardian Request), 6042 (Projection Maps) and 6043 (Mapping Data). Each motion passed with five ayes and one absence (Chris Gentry).
Policy 6041, described in the minutes as "Malcom X Day Education be recognized on May 19th of each year," was approved on a motion by Clint Taylor and seconded by Kevin Anderson. The minutes record a single "No" vote by Rodney Boots; all other listed members voted "Aye" and Chris Gentry was absent. The minutes spell the policy name "Malcom X"; this article uses the standard, corrected spelling "Malcolm X" when referring to the historical figure.
The board also approved switching to a plus/minus grading scale capped at a 4.0 GPA on a motion by Chris Cover, seconded by Kevin Anderson. The motion passed on the same 5–0 (1 absent) margin as other policy votes.
The minutes note that there was no motion to approve a new Policy 3060 (Firearms and Weapons for Non-Students) and that related entries (Policy 5035 and 5049) were moved or marked "Intentionally Left Blank" in the policy index.
