Canal Winchester council hears community, business and events updates

Canal Winchester City Council on March 2 received a series of routine community and economic development updates covering human services, downtown projects, and event planning.
Council President Laurie Amick relayed a report from Aletha Mullins, Director of Canal Winchester Human Services, that the community food pantry served 391 people and provided 5,511 meals during February. Mullins’ report also listed upcoming events: a Community Easter Egg Hunt on March 28, a Spring Community Care Day on May 16, and a Senior Financial Fraud Protection Workshop on April 16.
Amick also summarized recent Canal Winchester Industry and Commerce Corporation activity: the Kroger groundbreaking was rescheduled to March 19 with a target opening in November; a new bakery, Sweets of Grace, has leased 60 East Waterloo Street; Prewitt’s Early Education Center is set to open at 100 Cemetery Road; and other downtown tenant and facade changes are planned. Development Director Haire noted that BrewDog’s U.K. parent was acquired by Tilray Brands, but the acquisition does not include U.S. assets and the Canal Winchester location is unaffected for now.
David Payne and Destination Canal Winchester staff outlined event schedules: the Winter Farmers Market is March 7; the Art Stroll is May 16; and the Blues and Ribs Festival will run July 24–26, with a shuttle service being planned and seven food trucks already committed. Alec McLaughlin reported Chamber of Commerce news, including a $10,000 net income for the chamber’s main fundraiser and awards recognizing local businesses and leaders. Hanna Detwiler noted the Sustainability Commission’s Community Cleanup Day on April 18.
Most items were informational; no additional council action was recorded on these reports at the March 2 meeting.
