Sustainability Commission seeks clearer role with City leadership, plans meeting with mayor and council representatives

On March 4, 2026, members of the Canal Winchester Sustainability Commission asked city leaders for clearer guidance on the commission’s public role and proposed a meeting with Mayor Joe Steager, Administrator Matt Peoples, and council representatives to align expectations.

The commission said it will represent the city in public facing activities and therefore needs formal oversight and an approved process for events. Chair Cindy Kolecki and Vice‑Chair Dana Raines proposed a meeting that would include Councilmembers Hanna Detwiler (current representative) and Will Bennett (former representative) to discuss long‑term structure and responsibilities.

Commission members identified two signature events for 2026 — a Community Clean Up and a Community Yard Sale — and said the rest of 2026 should focus on crafting a mission statement and strategy that will guide future signature events planned for 2027. Members emphasized the need to compare the commission’s intended role with similar commissions in neighboring communities and to settle a point of contact for public engagement.

The group reviewed a draft strategic plan and recommended a two‑step event approval process: subcommittees develop event proposals, commission leadership consults city leadership, and the commission votes on events only after city review. Members noted outreach beyond the commission and city leadership should not begin until the event has been cleared through this process.
