Teachers and activities director report classroom projects, athletics and FFA participation

Several staff members updated the board on classroom work and student activities at the Oct. 15 Johnson-Brock Board of Education meeting.

First-grade teacher Sandy Behrends said her class of 16 students visited the fire station for fire-safety week and that she had 100% attendance at parent-teacher conferences. Middle-school teacher Rhonda Johnson said she is teaching 8th-grade Careers and Family and Consumer Science, co-teaching Study Skills, and noted elementary students are finishing Halloween projects; she also announced that Johnson-Brock will host the Pioneer Conference Art Show during the conference basketball tournament.

PK-4 teacher Tia Miller said parent-teacher conferences will begin in November, and that her PK-4 class will assist with the "Feed the Farmer" drive next week with a goal of packing about 50 bags; she also described a recent field trip titled "Bloom Where You Are Planted" and estimated the local "teammates" mentoring program has about 75080 active matches this school year.

Activity Director Mitch Roberts gave athletics and activities updates: the football team is 5-2 and enters playoffs next Thursday; the volleyball team is 15-9 and competing in the Pioneer Conference tournament; softball finished 15-9; four Johnson-Brock cross-country athletes competed with Nebraska City and district meets are Oct. 16; FFA has 77 members and nine students will attend Nationals at months end; SkillsUSA reported 20 members. Principal Dr. Lucus Dalinghaus said conferences went well, evaluations (31 total) have begun, and he is reviewing the mission statement as part of school improvement. Superintendent Jeffrey Koehler presented the District Assurance statement and the Early Childhood report and discussed the Student Bullying policy as part of the administrative update.
