Maize — The Maize City Council on June 15 approved a not‑to‑exceed $116,000 agreement with PEC to complete field survey, final plans and an engineer’s probable construction cost estimate for reconstruction of Irma Street.
Nick, a city staff member who presented the project, said Irma Street is a minor collector that intersects Maze Road and provides the only public street access to Maize Elementary School and nearby city facilities. He described the existing pavement as a shallow asphalt section with insufficient base and noted drainage problems on the western end of the corridor. “The proposed project is intended to reconstruct Irma Street from Maze Road to the western terminus,” Nick said, listing planned improvements that include pavement reconstruction, drainage improvements, curb and gutter where possible, and sidewalk upgrades.
The PEC agreement is funded from the city’s 2026 street capital improvement program and is intended to produce a grant‑ready design package to improve the city's chances for cost‑share funding. Staff said construction is currently budgeted for 2029 unless the city secures grant funding earlier.
Council moved and seconded to approve the PEC agreement and to authorize the mayor to sign; the motion carried.
What happens next: PEC will deliver survey work, final plans and a cost estimate; the city will use the design to pursue grant funding and to program the construction in the CIP. The council and staff said they expect the design to support future grant applications and to make the project shovel‑ready.
