Smith County Animal Rescue asks Marion council for $5,000 in budget year funding

Beverly Havoc told the Marion Town Council on June 15 that the Smith County Animal Rescue and Smith County Humane Society is asking the town to include a $5,000 allocation in the coming budget year to support operations.
Havoc described the organization’s activities and recent statistics: about 300 trap‑neuter‑release operations across the county this past year, 1,084 spay/neuter procedures countywide in the last year, and about 750 animals in care at various times. She said the SAR rescue operation has rescued more than 5,000 animals since its 2019 start and that the rescue and county shelter together processed 1,194 animals in the past year. The organization provides emergency-care seed funds (about a $7,000 budgeted emergency-care line), pet-food distribution, adoption services and transport partnerships with regional rescue groups.
Havoc asked council members to consider the $5,000 request during the budget approval process and invited council and staff to tour the rescue facility by appointment. Council members thanked her and encouraged donations and volunteer support; no formal council appropriation was taken at the meeting.
The organization requested the $5,000 appropriation be considered as the council finalizes the FY2026–27 budget.
