Council extends library operating agreement six months while staffs negotiate long-term deal

The Tumwater City Council voted unanimously on June 16 to authorize a six-month extension of its agreement with Timberland Regional Library while the city and the library complete leadership transitions and negotiate a long-term arrangement.
City Administrator Simmons told the council the only change in the document before them was the expiration date: “The only thing that changed on the agreement that’s before you tonight is the date,” he said, and added that the extension gives both organizations time to put the right staff in the room to work on terms.
Simmons also confirmed the local library branch does not pay rent to the city. Council member questions focused on timing and ensuring a thoughtful long-term solution; the council approved the mayor’s authorization to sign the second amendment after a motion and second and a unanimous roll-call vote.
Administrators said staff will continue negotiating a revised long-term agreement aimed at preserving library services for residents and addressing any future cost-sharing questions.
