Florence honors EMS team for rapid stroke care, council extends condolences for longtime chorus director

During the mayor’s report at the June 16 special meeting, city officials and healthcare partners recognized members of Florence EMS for a rapid handoff that contributed to a thrombolytic treatment being delivered within the system target for a May case.
A speaker from St. Elizabeth Healthcare described the American Heart Association’s "Target: Stroke" quality initiative and credited collaborative prehospital notification and handoff with the hospital for improving time to treatment. Certificates and challenge coins were presented to Florence EMS personnel named in the presentation. Battalion Chief Danielle Steiner was recognized; paramedic/ firefighter Taylor Schuler was unavailable and his certificate and "brain pen" were accepted by his wife, Haley.
Separately, Mayor Julie Alashon offered the council’s condolences on the passing of Don Whitus, longtime director of the Florence Community Chorus, and announced his funeral at Hickory Grove Baptist.
Council recessed to present awards later in the agenda and adjourned at the conclusion of the meeting.
