The Urban Redevelopment and Renewal Planning Committee on June 16 advanced a resolution to create a memorial designation for Essence and Tyler and forwarded the measure to the full City Council.
The clerk read a memo from the Department of Public Works Traffic Engineering Division noting no existing memorial square designations on Burnett Street and confirming the department would install appropriate signs once the resolution is finally approved. The committee voted to enter that memo into the record.
Aaron D. Gardner, deputy chief of staff for the city council, read a message from the majority leader expressing strong support and said, "gun violence is not the answer," urging the committee to recognize Diana’s leadership. Several council members recounted personal connections to the family and described Diana's years of advocacy following tragic losses.
Members said the memorial would both honor the lives lost and underscore the community’s resolve to address gun violence. The committee voted 'Aye' to forward the resolution to the full council; no final council action occurred at the meeting.
The traffic‑engineering memo and committee vote mean city departments will prepare for signage and further administrative steps if the full council approves the resolution.
