Police, fire and library reports highlight December activity, grant filing and upcoming community events

At the council meeting the police, fire and library departments briefed the council on December activity, equipment purchases and community programming.
Police Chief Alberton reported 304 calls for service in December, 17 reports, 18 citations and 34 warnings; the department recorded 33 warrants, four felony arrests, three misdemeanor arrests and one property complaint. Chief Alberton said the department ordered a new vehicle and is standardizing weapons and ammunition across the force.
Fire Chief Howard reported 71 emergency responses in December (six fires) and a year total of 962 calls, up from 929. Chief Howard said the department applied for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for $36,000 to purchase a light rescue unit and will expand fire-prevention inspections for local businesses, beginning with pre-fire inspections and guidance.
Marie, reporting for the library, said overall December checkouts and borrowers dipped slightly while new library cards and online logins increased; story-time attendance rose notably. The library will host a student art show opening Friday and a therapy dog visit Jan. 25, and will host dementia caregiver support meetings starting Feb. 6.
The council used the reports to note community needs and upcoming events (including a Westfest chili cook-off fundraiser on Feb. 22 to benefit school lunch accounts).
