Residents raise nighttime safety concerns; council hears police, fire, animal-control updates

Resident Jeff McDonald told the council he has observed large numbers of people walking with backpacks on South Johnson and East Raney late at night, raising local safety concerns. McDonald also praised the water department’s recent work.
The police report (read in Chief Bevills’ absence) recorded June court collections of $11,047 from 62 misdemeanor cases. The report noted Officer Golden remains on medical leave and the department has hired Rusty McCoy as a part-time officer.
Meeting minutes record that the Sheriff has notified the Quorum Court of a proposed increase in the daily jail fee from $35 to $75; that notification was noted but no council action was taken.
Chief Slocum reported Cotton Plant currently lacks personnel to staff its fire department and said McCrory has provided assistance on three calls in the last month. Chief Slocum offered to provide training to any Cotton Plant volunteers willing to learn equipment operation.
On animal control, the record shows 29 dogs currently in custody and that TAPS is scheduled to pick up 10 next week. In parks news, motors at the Elizabeth Swanson Park lift station are not working; staff will seek pricing to replace them.
Council later voted to pay the bills and adjourned at 8:29 p.m.
