City pushes 'Keep West Memphis Beautiful' cleanup for May 10; city to provide dumpsters and inmate crews

Councilwoman Muhammed outlined plans for Keep West Memphis Beautiful, the city's community cleanup day set for May 10.

"We're asking everybody to just join in with us," Muhammed said, describing the cleanup as both a service and a fellowship event. She said registration begins at 8 a.m. with assignments running until noon and noted the city provided dumpsters and that county inmate crews and corrections staff will assist with the effort.

Muhammed said the program has run since 2012 and that organizers expect volunteers of all ages, including high-school participants. Last year she said the cleanup had more than 100 participants. She also said the city will prioritize helping flood victims clear debris if residents call the mayor's office or post requests on the mayor's Facebook page.

Practical notes from the meeting: volunteers will be provided gloves, trash bags and grabbers; certain bulky or hazardous items (paint buckets, construction debris) should not be placed in city dumpsters; trainers and coaches have been asked to bring players to help.

Next steps: Council encouraged residents and organizations to register and participate on May 10; city staff and volunteer leaders will finalize dumpster locations and assignment details ahead of the event.
