Council approves two special-use permits for repair shops and a nuisance-condemnation resolution

The West Memphis City Council approved two ordinances on third reading authorizing special-use permits for vehicle repair operations and passed a resolution to certify the condemnation and removal of residential structures declared nuisances within the city limits.

During the third reading for the permit at 1305 Thompson Avenue, council members emphasized that new and existing businesses must follow city zoning and code requirements. "If they do not follow the ordinance, they will be cited," a council member said during the discussion prior to the vote. The ordinance passed and was assigned number 2698.

A second third reading covered a permit for a heavy vehicle repair mechanic shop at 301 South Wood Street in a light-industrial zone. Council again urged compliance with ordinances and approved the measure; ordinance number 2699 was recorded.

Separately, council moved to read and approve a resolution (R1/01) certifying condemnation and removal of houses and residential structures that constitute nuisances within the city corporate limits. The resolution was approved and assigned number 2319; no residents came forward to oppose the condemnation items during the hearing.

Council discussion included repeated requests for stricter enforcement and clearer adherence to the city's zoning rules. The council did not provide additional detail on enforcement dates or a schedule for condemnation actions during the meeting.
