McCrory council authorizes up to $3,000 to demolish fire-damaged house after condemnation

The McCrory City Council on June 10 authorized payment of up to $3,000 to have a condemned, fire-damaged house demolished and removed from a property owned by Teresa Wallis.
Wallis asked the council for an additional month to make repairs, but the Fire Chief said the house would need to be torn down and rebuilt because of fire damage and that the City had already condemned the property. City staff said they would consult the city attorney on next steps. Contractor Mike Creasey offered to demolish and remove the structure for $3,000 and said he could complete the work in a day or two.
Council member Tim Carter moved to pay Mike Creasey up to $3,000 to remove the house; Council member Lou Dallas seconded. Carter and Dallas voted in favor; Council members Massanelli and Reynolds abstained; Mayor Jackson voted in favor, and the motion carried.
Council members did not record additional remedial steps at the meeting; staff said they would check with the city attorney about legal requirements following condemnation.
